If you haven’t heard it yet, WooCommerce was just acquired by Automattic, the people behind WordPress. With this acquisition WordPress jumps immediately into the ecommerce scene without needing to build a system themselves nor compete with WooCommerce.

Matt, the founder of WordPress said that it would take months to integrate WooCommerce into WordPress.com. Based on that, it will come soon! With ecommerce growing at an amazing rate, WordPress’ decision to buy them out is a great move for everyone.

On our side, we feel that it is a very astute move by Matt and it makes WordPress.com a very worthy competitor to not just Squarespace and Wix, but to Shopify and Magento once they’ve fully integrated WooCommerce in. If you have previously purchased licenses from WooCommerce, they’re all still active and working. And WooCommerce doesn’t plan to change that anytime soon.

I built my first website in 1999 and many other sites after. After building a number of sites for friends and family, I decided to pick up web development professionally and graduated from NextAcademy, a Malaysian bootcamp. I've worked for a WordPress plugin company before working in the Malaysian Startup scene as a web developer. Nowadays, I build and maintain turnkey and bespoke sites. I also review WordPress plugins and digital marketing tools while running this site and the WPStarters Facebook Group. Do swing by and say hi :)
