After the acquisition of Restrict Content Pro by iThemes / Liquid Web three weeks ago, the WordPress world was treated to another shock as GoDaddy acquired SkyVerge. SkyVerge joins GoDaddy’s growing WordPress products and services group, which includes ManageWP, CoBlocks and WP Curve. With GoDaddy, Liquid Web (iThemes & Restrict Content Pro) and WP Engine (FlyWheel & StudioPress) all acquiring WordPress products, it will be interesting to see how the industry will change in the next 5 to 10 years.
With WordPress powering 33.9% of the top 1 million websites (Alexa), we believe that these investments will pay off in due season. However, the bigger challenge is whether these products will be stone walled to WordPress developers and digital agency owners who are not subscribed to GoDaddy, Liquid Web nor WP Engine’s hosting service.
The purchase of SkyVerge however, is surprising as SkyVerge is one of the leading producers of WooCommerce extensions and the owners of Jilt, an email marketing platform for WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads and Shopify. Some of SkyVerge’s prominent WooCommerce extensions include WooCommerce Memberships, WooCommerce Customer / Order / Coupon Export & WooCommerce Print Invoices and Packing Lists.
We hope that these extensions will receive the care and updates needed, and that they’ll be greater growth on SkyVerge’s products due to GoDaddy’s much deeper finances. Here’s a video on Jilt below
